Pete Alonso just made it look too easy on Monday night.
The Mets first basemanset the record for the most home runs in a Home Run Derby first round. He didn't need extra time to win the second round. And in the finals, he hit each of the first six pitches he saw in his bonus time for home runs to walk off Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini and claim his second straight derby crown.
Each round, Alonso put on a show. He led off against Royals catcher Salvador Perez with 35 homers in the opening round. After Nationals outfielder Juan Soto kicked off thesecond round with 15 — fresh off a thrilling win over Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani — Alonsopassed his NL East opponent with 16 homers.
In the finals, Alonso met up with Mancini. A year after he beat Stage III colon cancer, Mancini thrilled the crowd, launching 24 homers as the first batter up in the derby. He beatAthletics first baseman Matt Olson and then walkedoff the hometown hero, Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, with 13 homers to Story's 12.
Coming into the clash at Coors Field, everyone expected to see Ohtani, the No. 1 seed, carry the night. And he did excite in the first round, tying upSoto after a slow start and forcing two swing-offs before Soto ultimately won the first-round clash by hitting all three pitches of the secondswing-off out for home runs. Ohtani grounded the first pitch he saw in the final swing-off.

10:19 p.m.: Alonso's first home run is a liner, and the second one is way back onto the concourse. He's already earned his bonus time with five long balls.
10:17 p.m.: Alonso will need to hit 15 home runs to tie and 16 home runs to win after Soto wraps up his time.
10:14 p.m.: Soto has a full minute of bonus time available after hitting 11 during his regular time.

9:13 p.m.: Perez hits seven straight home runs to wrap up the round. He would have beat almost any other batter so far. The only problem? Alonso was not any other batter.
9:11 p.m.: Perez had a strong first round, hitting 17 home runs at an average distance of 456 feet. He gets an extra minute to swing, but he'll need to hit 18 more in order to tie Alonso.
9:08 p.m.: Perez hits five straight home runs, but with 1:44 left, he takes a timeout at only nine home runs. He's got a long way to go to catch the "Polar Bear."

8:25 p.m.: Mancini uses his extra minute of time to send 24 baseballs over the fence. His longest home run was 496 feet, according to the broadcast. What a start to this derby. Now, it's up to Matt Olson to top that.

8:22 p.m.: The timeout really did the trick for Mancini. He hits 58 percent of his swings for home runs and finishes with 19 homers. Four of them went at least 475 feet, which means he'll get an extra minute of bonus time.
